Merv Review – A Canine Star Steals the Show in the Streaming Giant’s Formulaic Christmas Romcom

It is a widely held belief for numerous people that co-parenting a canine companion post-separation is ill-advised. The consensus suggests such situations prevent former couples from moving forward, create logistical nightmares, fuel disputes, and become annoying for everyone involved. Apparently, and in a twist fit for a streaming movie, it reportedly leads to our furry friends to become depressed.

Not to downplay the mental health of dogs – pet parents attest to their remarkable empathy. If you need masterclass in pet despair, simply recall another performance. I firmly believe that a dog of Merv's nature, a wired-hair terrier mix portrayed by a talented dog named Gus, would have a hard time adjusting to divided living arrangements. Whether this premise an entire Christmas romance around this situation works effectively is debatable at best.

A Familiar Formula

Fairness demands noting, Merv, the work of the writing duo and under the guidance of Jessica Swale, makes no grand claims more profound than a light film. This is a seasonal offering from a corporate studio – the complexity remains surface-level. The plot proves to be straightforward: former spouses Russ, played by Charlie Cox and Anna, portrayed by Zooey Deschanel, confronting that their individual funk is rivaled only by their dog's, take a uplifting getaway to a luxury pet hotel. At this location, predictably, they will presumably stumble toward the idea that they should reunite. Side characters – featuring a group of comedic actors – fulfill roles eccentric, underutilized, or over-the-top. The film's look carries the feel of a branded content, with a Christmas setting that is clearly manufactured – think fake snow clinging to verdant foliage as North Carolina stands in for a wintery Boston.

Where the Film Shines

If these standard ingredients come together into an entertaining watch depends on the actors' work and one's taste for cinematic comfort food. Regarding the second aspect, Merv knows its audience – individuals who scroll endlessly for cute animal clips. It provides a plethora of canine-centric sequences. The central draw is the canine star, and even if it causes some stilted moments between what the dog does and the actors' responses, the movie succeeds in showing dog beach fun, pet moping, and, ultimately, a tail-wagging resolution.

The Two-Legged Cast

This level of success cannot be applied for the romantic plot. The film's approach vacillates between emotional depth, zany antics, standard rom-com beats, and silly gags, failing to master any one mode. This is not Cox's performance, who is fully game the humiliating and funny inherent in the unusual premise. Cox exhibits a likable self-deprecation that supplies the bulk of the chemistry for this seemingly ideal couple. Her co-star Deschanel, true to her usual style, injects a distinctive offbeat energy that will click for some but not others. Her Anna can feel a little too aloof, particularly when contrasted against Cox's heartfelt sincerity. (It should be noted, the canine performer manages acting depressed – while no a canine thespian of that caliber, he is still a very good boy.)

Merv tries to give weight to the central romance for moments when the dog is absent – a bit of a pity, considering the title character is by far the best part of this film designed for charm. Unsurprisingly, it achieves only baseline competence. The reason for the split could have been more adult and realistic with more screen time and fewer direct statements. In the end, Merv is gentle and pleasant, fulfilling precisely what you anticipate. Making a film about dog co-parenting is not terrible – though it's hardly a great one either.

  • Merv becomes available on Amazon Prime Video on December 10th.
