It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.
It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
