In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
