The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
