Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say early analysis show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for details.

A senior official commented the attack rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
